How to childproof your house without breaking the bank!
1) Move treasured figurines, crystal ornaments, etc., out of reach of
little hands. This will help avoid the temptation to touch and
possibly break your delicate possessions.
2) Take a quick tour of your house while walking on your hands and knees.
This will give you a child's perspective of your home, and will point out to
you possible "danger spots", such as easily assessable electrical outlets.
3) Keep houseplants out of reach. They can be toxic. In addition, placing
plants out of reach will hopefully avoid having a child pull one down
on his or her head.
4) Make sure that bags or purses containing medication are out of reach.
5) Keep bathroom doors and toilet lids closed as often as possible. This
reduces the risk of drowning (or drinking out of the toilet bowl)!
6) Keep outside doors closed. This helps reduce the risk of a child wandering
outside unattended.
7) Invest in a few small plastic outlet covers. This is critical and will help avoid
electrocution.
8) Invest in table-corner guards. This can help reduce the risk of injury.
9) Watch out for hanging curtain or blind cords...these are mighty dangerous in
the wrong hands.
10) Put up some expandable gates to block stairs, both top and bottom. This will
help you keep a close eye on your kids and avoid spills.
11) Put all of your household cleansers way out of reach. They frequently contain
dangerous, even toxic chemicals. While you're at it, invest in some plastic
childproof cabinet locks.
