Nine easy steps to cleaning your furnace filter....

1) If the floor in front of your furnace is dusty or dirty, vacuum or sweep

it before you begin.

2) Locate the furnace's removable service panel. This is often found on the

side or front of the furnace itself.

3) Turn off the furnace. The best way to do this is by finding the switch that

shuts the entire unit down. This switch usually looks like a

regular light switch.

4) Remove the panel door. This should be easy.

5) Slide the filter out.

6) Check and see if the filter is dusty or dirty. If it is, you will need to clean

or replace it.

7) If your filter is the washable type, use a hose to wash away any dirt or

grime caught in it. Let it dry and then return it to the furnace.

8) If you have a "throw away" filter, write down the size (as an example,

it might be 20" x 24"). Then go to the hardware store and ask for a

furnace filter of that size. Regular furnace filters are

really cheap...usually under $2.00.

9) Take the new filter home and insert it into your furnace's service panel.

Make sure that the arrows on it are pointing in the right

direction (these indicate air flow direction). Turn the

furnace switch back on.
