What's the best way to fertilize a lawn?

1) Time your lawn feedings. Let your lawn green up a little

bit in the spring before you apply a fertilizer.

2) Choose a lawn fertilizer that is made for your type of grass.

Each bag has information specifying what type of grass

the fertilizer will work on.

3) You don't half to buy the most expensive fertilizer on the

market. Clint and Sandee have been very happy with

Menard's brand, and it's a lot cheaper than Scott's.

4) Pay attention to the bag's instructions. If it says that you have

to water after application, you should do it. Also, some

fertilizers say not to apply them when temps are over

90 degrees.

5) Apply the right amount of fertilizer, so your lawn gets

a nice feeding but doesn't get burned.

6) Be careful not to apply certain fertilizers (like those with

weed killers) too near your shrubs and flowers. They can

kill those, too.

7) Fertilize your grass a few times during the year (your fertilizer

bag should specify how often to feed your grass). In addition,

it's not a bad idea to apply a winterizer at the end of the

growing season.

8) Clint and Sandee fertilize their front yard but not their

backyard. Why? We have two dogs and, as all dog lovers

know, dogs eat grass (and lots of other weird stuff). We

would rather have an ugly backyard (where the dogs go

to play & do their business) and healthy dogs. Most

fertilizers have some nasty chemicals in them.

9) Don't throw away fertilizer bags that are half used. Clint

and Sandee just tape the bags closed and use the extra

   fertilizer for the next feeding.
