In the kitchen

If your cabinets are in bad shape, paint or replacing them. | |
If your countertops are scratched or damaged, have them repaired or replaced. | |
Remove unnecessary clutter from your countertops. | |
Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink. | |
Don't cook smelly foods! The smell lingers and can turn buyers off. | |
Clean your windows (this applies to the whole house). | |
Replace any burned out light bulbs (this also applies to the whole house). |
In the bathroom

Repair or replace any dripping faucets. | |

Tighten your toilet bowl if it's loose. | |

Make sure that you vanity is neat, clean and well organized. | |

Replace any old or moldy bathtub/shower caulk. | |

Make sure that your wallpaper (if any) is not hanging off the wall. | |

Repaint walls if necessary. | |

Unclog sink and bathtub drains. | |

Make sure that your bathtub is sparkling clean and free of soap scum, hair, etc. | |

Keep fresh towels in the bathroom. | |

Keep a deodorizer in the bathroom. |
General living areas

Make sure that all plaster and/or drywall is in good shape. | |

Make sure that all windows are sparkling clean. | |

If you have windows with broken seals, replace them. | |

If there are cobwebs hanging from your walls, remove them. | |

If your carpeting is dirty, clean it. | |
|
If your carpeting is wrinkled, have it stretched (or replace it). | |

If your walls are dirty or stained, paint them. | |

Clean and check your fireplace. | |

If your windows don't open and close easily, fix and/or lubricate them. | |

Keep your draperies and/or blinds open, so your rooms look brighter & more open. | |

Make sure that all light switches and outlets are working. | |

Straighten out your closets and give away any unused or out of style clothing. | |

Lubricate any noisy or sticky doors & hinges. | |

Keep your carpeting vacuumed and looking clean. | |

Place room deodorizers where they are needed. | |
Replace or repair any damaged or broken blinds. | |
Don't leave dirty clothes laying around. | |
Leave some lights on (inside and outside) to make evening showings easier. |
Outdoors

Invest in landscaping (especially where it can be viewed from the street). | |

Keep your grass neatly cut. | |

Keep your bushes and shrubs neat & well manicured. | |

Keep your driveway & walkway shoveled in the winter. | |
|
Keep all of your exterior lights working (and on at night). | |

Inspect your roof and gutters for needed repairs. | |

Touch up any nicked or flaking exterior paint (repaint your home if necessary). | |

If your fence is damaged, repair it. | |
|
Place flowers outside your front door. | |
|
Wash any exterior siding (if it's dirty). |
Basement, attic and garage
|
Clean up any clutter. | |

Wash your garage floor and remove (if possible) any oil stains. | |
|
If you have cobwebs in your basement, remove them. | |
|
Make sure that it is easy for people to look into your attic. | |
|
Keep stairways clean and well lit. | |
|
Buy a dehumidifier for your basement (if necessary). | |

Repair any cracked or discolored floors. |
