Preparing your home for summer...

1) Check your windows and exterior doors for tightness. (air leaks are a major source of energy loss).

If you feel a draft or a breeze, caulk the open area or add weatherproof stripping. Also check for

breezes around electrical outlets, vents, outside light fixtures, etc.,

2) Service and maintain your central and/or window air conditioner, to make sure that it is in top operating

condition,

3) To cut down on unwanted heat and/or humidity in your home, plan meals that require little or no heating.

Use a microwave oven for cooking whenever possible,

4) Use grass, trees and shrubs to reduce the heat entering your home. These plants can reflect sunshine that

would normally directly hit your home,

5) For window treatments, select tightly-woven fabrics to reduce the amount of heat gain. Lowering your

window shades will reflect most of the sun's energy back outside.

6) Use solar control films that stick to window panes to reduce glare without blocking your view.

7) Make sure that your gas bar-b-que (if you have one) has a full tank of gas, so your outdoor meals are

not interrupted.
